Although the process of spatial adjustment to the transformation forces is very complex, the evidence available seems to reveal some generał patterns. According to them, in countries that have common borders with the EU and are in vicinityto the European core, the spatial adaptation favours Western and metropolitan regions. However, the disparities grow at a different pace and to a different extent in all countries under the transformation achieving higher levels compared to most EU countries. On the basis of extensive mathematical analyses, the authors of the paper show changes in the regional international competitiveness factors of borderland regions. The processes of specialization and concentration are evaluated in details. \(original abstract\)"]
