Abstrakt:

The article describes structural change in China. For the purpose of this paper, structural change refers to changes in compositional structures of output, employment, investment, and export. The paper also aims to develop a framework to identify the key determinants of China's structural change. The process of structural change in China started over 30 years ago. Since then, the country has experienced a rapid de-agrarianization process and embarked on its industrialization path. The most significant factors influencing structural change seem to be an inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) and access to advanced technology. A strategy of export oriented industrialization (EOI) has bought positive results too. Several phenomena described within the paper go some way towards explaining the extremely high rates of growth experienced in the Chinese economy in recent times. Through analyzing a case study such as that of China, we can notice that even without political liberalization, structural change may bring a country's economic system closer to that of a well-functioning market economy.
